On February 8, 2014, the Pima Air & Space Museum hosted the 3rd Annual Great Paper Airplane Fly-Off. Children aged 6-14 put their paper airplane folding abilities to the test in three different age categories. With over 300 competitors registered, this year’s event was the largest to date. Once again the event was sponsored by Mars Chocolate North America and the Red M&M was there to cheer on all of the competitors. Competitors and museum visitors alike also got to see the #18 M&M’S NASCAR® race car and test their own skills in the #18 M&Ms racing simulator. Additional activities at the Fly-Off included an inflatable obstacle course and the opportunity to learn about the 4 forces of flight with the Physics Factory and a chance to visit with real A-10 Fighter Pilots “Juice” and “Ion” from the 355th Fighter Wing at Davis-Monthan AFB. We also introduced the Family Fly-Off Competition this year, with 8 families participating. Fly-Off winners received a Great Paper Airplane Project flight jacket, an iPad Air with a $50 gift certificate to the App Store, a family membership to the Pima Air & Space Museum and the Titan Missile Museum and a 60-minute discovery flight for two over Tucson courtesy of Double Eagle Aviation. The winners’ names will also be engraved on the perpetual trophy that will remain on display at the museum as part of the Great Paper Airplane Exhibit. Winners from the Family Fly-Off Competition received a family membership to the Pima Air & Space Museum and the Titan Missile Museum and a 60-minute discovery flight for two over Tucson courtesy of Double Eagle Aviation.
